The SONGS Replacement Steam Generator Project

The advanced tube wear conditions at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) steam generators were first detected in January 2012. Since that time, Mitsubishi has worked closely with Southern California Edison (SCE) and the NRC to conduct a comprehensive and thorough inspection and technical analysis in order to better understand the causes of the unexpected tube wear.

On June 7, 2013, SCE announced its decision to permanently retire SONGS Units 2 and 3. SCE announced in a press release that the decision was driven by regulatory uncertainty concerning the restart of both units and the associated economic impacts.

Mitsubishi is now focused on sharing data and lessons learned with the industry to ensure future steam generator designs will be equipped to prevent in-plane tube vibration (fluid elastic instability).
